Racking Accessories Singapore: Protection and Load Safety

Racking accessories in Singapore are the components that keep a rack standing after the first forklift knock. They are also the line most often stripped from a quote to hit a price. Industry guidance finds most upright damage lands in the first 600mm off the floor. This blog walks you through protection, decking, signage and load safety components, starting with our racking accessories range.

What counts as a racking accessory, and which ones actually matter?

A racking accessory is any component added to the basic upright and beam structure, either to carry a load the structure cannot carry alone or to contain what happens during an impact or overload. Every accessory falls into one of two groups. Buyers who mix the groups up tend to overspend on one and underprotect on the other.

Load path accessories carry weight. Wire decking, pallet support bars and shelf panels let a beam pair hold something a bare beam cannot, so they change what the rack can store. Safety accessories carry no product at all. Upright protectors, guard rails, anti collapse mesh and load notices sit there for the day something goes wrong.

The distinction decides the budget. You price a load path accessory against the stock it enables. You price a safety accessory against the cost of the failure it prevents, and for a collapsed bay that cost is stopped operations and a MOM investigation. The price of the part barely enters into it. So buy the load path accessories your stock needs and the safety accessories your risk assessment demands. Treating either group as optional is where the trouble starts.

What counts as a racking accessory, and which ones actually matter?

What do upright protectors and guard rails actually do?

They take the forklift impact before it reaches the upright. That matters because a damaged upright loses load capacity, and a bare upright has no margin to give up in the first place. The EN 15512 family sets the specification: a column protector at least 400mm high, positioned at the end upright of each run and at every aisle and gangway intersection.

Most buyers skip the energy figure. A compliant upright protector absorbs at least 400 Nm at any height between 0.1m and 0.4m off the floor, which is where a forklift makes contact. That 400 Nm is a compliance minimum. SEMA’s racking protection guidance is blunt about what a guard actually buys you: the protection given to corner uprights is “primarily visual”. A guard reduces and deflects the hit. It does not excuse careless driving.

Placement follows the damage. Since most upright damage occurs in the lowest 600mm, protection concentrates on the base, and the end frames exposed to passing traffic carry the highest risk. Guard rails and end of aisle barriers extend that protection across the whole end frame and along any pedestrian route running beside the rack.

Protect the positions the traffic actually hits. A blanket guard order across every upright in the building wastes money the risk assessment would have put into the end frames and intersections that take the knocks. The upright frame damage guide shows what an unprotected hit does to capacity.

What do upright protectors and guard rails actually do?

When do you need anti collapse mesh behind racking?

Whenever the back or side of a rack faces a pedestrian walkway, a workstation or a public area. Anti collapse mesh is a steel mesh screen fixed to the rear or side frames, and it stops cartons, totes or loose items falling through the rack onto whoever is standing on the other side.

The layout is what triggers it. A rack backing onto a solid wall does not need mesh. The same rack backing onto a packing bench or a main walkway does, because the failure being prevented is a person struck by a falling load. That puts mesh squarely under the occupier’s duty of care.

Two specs matter: height and mesh aperture. The screen runs the full loaded height of the rack, and the aperture is sized so the smallest item stored cannot pass through it. Mesh sized for cartons does nothing against small parts that slip through the gaps.

Specify anti collapse mesh at layout stage wherever a rack and a walkway share a boundary. Retrofitting means working around live racking and stored stock, and that costs more than designing it in.

Do your beams need wire decking or pallet support bars?

Only when the load does not sit safely on two beams alone. Wire decking and pallet support bars are load path accessories that give a beam pair a surface or a support the bare beams cannot provide, and each solves a different problem.

Pallet support bars are transverse bars running front to back across the beam pair. They carry pallets that are damaged, undersized or turned the wrong way for the beam spacing, and they stop a pallet whose stringers miss the beams from dropping through.

Wire decking does something else. It turns a beam pair into a continuous shelf, so you can store cartons, totes and hand loaded stock directly on the level. The fire angle usually decides the format. In a sprinkler protected warehouse, solid decking stops the discharge reaching stock below it, so wire mesh or an approved open format is what keeps the sprinkler design valid.

Deck the levels holding non palletised stock and support bar the ones holding awkward pallets. Decking every level by default adds cost to positions a clean pallet sits on without help.

Is a rack load notice a legal requirement in Singapore?

A load notice is required in practice, because SS EN 15635 requires the operator to display the racking’s design loads, and MOM’s safe use of storage racks duty of care makes the occupier accountable for keeping the rack within them. A rack load notice states the maximum unit load per pallet position and the maximum load per bay, so anyone loading the rack can see the limit without guessing.

The notice also ties the physical rack back to the structural design SS EN 15512 signed off, which is why an inspector or an insurer looks for it first after an incident. A rack running without one is a rack nobody on the floor can prove they were loading correctly.

One notice per rack run is the standard, positioned at the end of the run where it gets read on approach. It has to match the as installed configuration. Display a current load notice on every rack run and reissue it whenever the beam levels are reconfigured. It costs almost nothing and it is the cheapest piece of compliance in the building.

What do rack labels and location signage add?

They turn the rack into an addressable grid, which is what a warehouse management system needs to direct a pick and what a stocktake needs to stay accurate. Beam load labels, location barcodes and aisle signage are low cost accessories that pay back in pick accuracy and speed.

Location labels give every beam level and bay a unique address. The WMS assigns stock to that address and the picker scans it to confirm the right position, so a mislabelled or missing location becomes a mispick. Beam labels also carry the beam’s load rating, which keeps the bay figure on the load notice traceable down to the individual level.

Then there is the choice between adhesive and magnetic. Adhesive labels are cheaper and permanent. Magnetic labels move with a reconfiguration, which suits a 3PL floor that re slots stock as clients change.

Label every location before go live. Retrofitting a labelling scheme onto a live, part full rack means reconciling stock against addresses that did not exist when it was put away.

Are floor anchors and shims mandatory on racking?

Yes. Every upright has to be anchored to the slab. SS EN 15512 treats the base fixing as part of the structure, so an unanchored rack has lost restraint the design assumed it would have. Floor anchors are the mechanical bolts that fix the base plate to the concrete. Shims are the thin plates that level that base plate on an uneven slab.

The anchor does structural work. It transfers the rack’s overturning and impact forces into the floor, and it keeps a struck upright from walking off its base plate. An upright standing on an unbolted base plate is relying on its own weight, which is well short of what the EN 15512 calculation assumed.

Shims get less attention than they deserve. A base plate packed with too many of them sits on an unstable stack, so the tolerance on shim thickness is a hard limit. Where the slab is out by more than the shims allow, the floor gets corrected.

Anchor every upright to the manufacturer’s specification and level the base plates within the shim tolerance. Inspectors check this group first, because it is the one holding the rest up.

Can you retrofit accessories to racking already installed?

Yes, and most accessory purchases are retrofits driven by a rack inspection rather than fitted at build. SS EN 15635 sets a damage assessment that grades findings green, amber or red, and it is the amber and red findings that send an operator shopping for protectors, mesh and load notices after the fact.

The inspection is the trigger. Unprotected end frames at a traffic route, a rack run with no load notice, a walkway with no anti collapse mesh: each one produces a line on the retrofit list, and each line closes a specific finding. That makes the spend remediation work, so budget it as such.

Damaged components are the exception. Where the inspection finds a bent upright or a deflected beam, protection added around it does not restore the lost capacity, and the repair versus replacement decision applies to the component itself. Accessories prevent the next hit. They do nothing about the last one.

Fit the protection the inspection calls for and replace the components it condemns. Bolting a guard onto an already damaged upright hides the problem.

Where to spend and what to skip

Racking accessories split into components that carry load and components that contain failure. Decking and support bars change what the rack can store. Protectors, mesh, anchors and load notices change what happens on the day something goes wrong, which in Singapore is the difference between a near miss and a MOM investigation. Specify both groups against your layout and your risk assessment, and treat the load notice and floor anchors as the compliance floor everything else sits on.

How often should racking accessories be inspected?
