Top Warehouse Racking Solutions: A Short Review
July 9, 2024Industrial racking in Singapore is not a generic purchase. What you store, how fast it moves, and the sector you operate in each push the specification a different way. This blog will walk you through how manufacturing, food and beverage, electronics, pharmaceutical and 3PL operations configure their racking, and the standards every install has to clear.
Quick answer: how to choose industrial racking in Singapore
Start with the SKU profile, meaning pallet size, weight and count. Match it to a configuration: selective for general pallets, drive in or double deep for bulk, cantilever for long loads, mezzanines for multi level storage. Confirm the design conforms to SS EN 15512 for structural strength and SS EN 15635 for use and inspection. Then layer in the sector requirement that changes everything else: cold chain for food and pharma, ESD for electronics, multi tenant zoning for 3PL.
The sector overlay is what this guide covers in depth. For the warehouse racking Singapore operations we support, the sector decides the configuration mix more than any single spec sheet does.
Standards and configuration specs: the essentials
Pallet racking installed in Singapore conforms to two Singapore Standards adopted from the European EN family. SS EN 15512 governs the structural design, meaning beam deflection, upright capacity and base plate loading, and it is the reference a supplier works from on tender drawings. SS EN 15635 governs the operational side, meaning the inspection regime and the damage classification that keep the rack safe in use.
The full standards picture and the side by side specifications for each configuration, from selective through drive in, double deep, very narrow aisle, heavy duty, cantilever and mezzanine, now sit in our industrial racking options for factories and warehouses guide. This page concentrates on the layer that guide does not: how each sector actually deploys those configurations.
Applications by sector
Five sectors cover most industrial racking demand in Singapore, and each pushes the design toward a different mix of configurations. This is where a generic specification meets a real operation, and where most of the value of getting the racking right actually sits.
Manufacturing
Manufacturing warehouses handle three stock states at once, raw materials, work in progress and finished goods, often inside the same building. The racking has to serve all three without forcing one to compromise another.
Raw materials go on drive in or double deep against the inbound dock, because single SKU lanes match how raw material arrives, one pallet type per delivery. Work in progress sits on selective racking line side, kept shorter and reachable without a forklift so cycle times stay tight. Finished goods wait on selective racking under FIFO discipline, which rules out drive in for that stock because drive in forces last in first out.
Heavy palletised stock is its own decision. Engine blocks, steel coils, tooling and moulds run past the load range of standard pallet racking and move onto heavy duty frames rated at 2,500kg and above per beam pair. The heavy duty racking applications that these sectors rely on show where that load class earns its place. Long parts such as metal profiles, tubes and sheet stock go on cantilever rather than pallet racking, because they have no pallet to sit on.
Tuas, Jurong and Sungei Kadut remain the dominant manufacturing nodes, and the building stock in each shapes the clear height the racking can use.
Food and beverage and cold chain
Singapore’s food and beverage sector spans central kitchens, chilled and frozen distribution and beverage warehousing, and temperature plus turnover dominate every racking decision. Ambient dry goods run standard selective or double deep with no special coating.
Chilled stock at 0°C to 8°C and frozen stock at minus 18°C to minus 25°C most often run drive in with a hot dip galvanised finish. The single SKU lane format matches how cold stock turns, and the galvanised coating handles the condensation cycling that would corrode a powder coat. Below minus 25°C, the supplier engineering has to be verified against the impact toughness grades in the EN 15512 family, because standard steel turns brittle at very low temperature.
Cold chain layout answers to the regulator as much as the stock. The Singapore Food Agency requires the cold chain to stay unbroken and raw stock to stay separated from finished product, set out in its food establishment operator responsibilities, and the SCDF Fire Code 2023 governs storage height against sprinkler coverage. Dated stock also needs FIFO rotation, which is why pallet flow appears in food warehouses where drive in would age the stock at the back of the lane.
Electronics
Electronics warehousing in Singapore, covering components, semiconductors and finished consumer devices, runs high SKU counts at low unit weights. That profile pulls the design away from heavy pallet racking and toward shelving and multi tier picking.
Component storage sits on longspan or boltless shelving at 100kg to 600kg per level, often stacked several tiers high. Where the building has 6m to 7m of clear height and vertical pallet racking would be uneconomic, mezzanine rack supported platforms double or triple the pick face inside the existing footprint, an approach set out in our multi tier picking design guide. Palletised finished goods go on selective racking, often with wire mesh decks for FIFO discipline.
ESD sensitive zones integrate the racking with ESD flooring and grounding at the floor and accessory level. The racking steel itself usually needs no ESD treatment, which is a common point of over specification.
Pharmaceutical
Pharmaceutical warehousing layers GDP and GMP compliance, batch traceability and tighter temperature control on top of the food cold chain rules. The Health Sciences Authority enforces Good Distribution Practice, and audit readiness usually drives the layout more than pure storage efficiency does.
GDP compliant ambient pharma runs on selective racking with wire mesh decks, because the mesh allows sprinkler coverage and lets an auditor read a label per dispatch. Cool zones held at 15°C to 25°C use the same hardware with stricter humidity control. Cold chain pharma at 2°C to 8°C runs drive in or selective with a hot dip galvanised finish, and the cold chain pallet flow for pharma approach suits dated temperature controlled stock. Ultra low temperature storage at minus 30°C and below needs verified low temperature steel grades under the SS EN 15512 and EN 1993 series.
Pharma facilities cluster in Tuas Biomedical Park, Loyang and parts of Jurong, and the inspection records, deviation logs and dispatch labelling shape the racking layout as much as the pallet count.
Third party logistics
Third party logistics warehouses run the highest SKU diversity per square metre of any sector in Singapore, so their racking is almost never a single type. The floor splits into zones, one per client, and the layout has to support per client billing inside the warehouse management system.
Velocity based slotting places A band fast movers on selective racking at the dispatch door and C band slow movers on drive in or double deep at the back. Very narrow aisle racking earns its higher capital cost in prime rent areas such as Tuas and Tampines, where the land saving pays it back inside five years. Cross dock zones at the docks run flow racks or low bay selective with no high storage. Our multi client layout planning guide sets out how those zones divide.
The 3PL sector is also the most likely to run an enterprise system such as SAP EWM, Microsoft Dynamics 365 SCM or Manhattan, which means the racking has to be bay addressable at the granularity the system tracks. That constraint flows back into how finely the zones get designed.
How to select the right configuration
The decision sequence that holds up on Singapore projects runs in a fixed order, because reversing it is what causes expensive rework.
- List every pallet type, dimension and worst case weight on one sheet.
- Profile SKU velocity with an ABC analysis on the last 12 months of picking data, or sales data as a proxy if pick data is missing.
- Fix the building constraints: clear height, floor flatness, sprinkler position, column grid and dock access.
- Confirm the design conforms to SS EN 15512 for structural strength and SS EN 15635 for operational safety, and check the load rated capacity tables against the worst case pallet.
- Apply the sector overlay: cold chain, ESD, GDP or multi tenant, whichever governs.
- Set the configuration mix, which is almost always a blend of selective for A and B movers, drive in or double deep for C, with cantilever or mezzanine where the SKU profile demands.
Buying steel before the constraints are locked is the single most common cause of costly rework on a Singapore racking project.
Frequently asked questions
What standards must industrial racking meet in Singapore?
Pallet racking conforms to SS EN 15512 for structural design and SS EN 15635 for use and inspection. On top of those, the SCDF Fire Code 2023 governs storage height against sprinklers, and MOM Workplace Safety and Health rules require documented rack inspections and qualified installers.
Which racking suits a manufacturing warehouse?
Manufacturing usually needs a blend. Drive in or double deep holds raw materials by the inbound dock, selective racking serves work in progress and finished goods under FIFO, heavy duty frames rated above 2,500kg carry engine parts and moulds, and cantilever holds long metal profiles and sheet stock.
What racking is used in cold storage in Singapore?
Chilled and frozen food stores most often use drive in racking with a hot dip galvanised finish, which resists condensation corrosion. The Singapore Food Agency requires an unbroken cold chain and raw to finished separation, and dated stock uses pallet flow for FIFO rotation rather than drive in.
How is racking for electronics different?
Electronics runs high SKU counts at low weights, so it leans on longspan and boltless shelving at 100kg to 600kg per level rather than heavy pallet racking. Mezzanine platforms add pick face in low buildings, and ESD control sits in the flooring and accessories rather than the rack steel.
What does pharmaceutical warehousing require?
Pharma adds HSA Good Distribution Practice, batch traceability and controlled temperature zones. Selective racking with wire mesh decks suits ambient and cool GDP storage, cold chain runs galvanised drive in or selective at 2°C to 8°C, and ultra low temperature storage needs verified low temperature steel grades.
Why do 3PL warehouses mix racking types?
Third party logistics runs the widest SKU range per square metre, so a single rack type serves none of its clients well. The floor divides into per client zones, fast movers sit on selective at the dispatch door, slow movers on drive in at the back, and the racking stays bay addressable for the warehouse management system.
What is the most common industrial racking mistake?
Buying steel before the constraints are fixed. Ordering racking before the SKU profile, clear height, sprinkler position and standards conformance are confirmed is the leading cause of expensive rework on Singapore projects.
